This is interesting. I too held off for months before I opened this book. The message I got from the book was that we were to "engage" in sabbath. I don't think the author used that term in his book, but that word stayed with me for days. I decided to google the term "engaging in Sabbath" and your blog page came up. It is interesting to note that I never even mentioned the author's name and that you had the same reluctancy to open the book as I had. Just thought I would pass this along...

"we can pick the best lane for us when we give up on the idea that one lane will make us better than another."

interesting statement...I love the idea of fulfilling instead of working toward the identity. thought provoking to say the least!

Reminds me of a song by the Tedeschi Trucks Band called "simple things."

Verse 2 reads: So you've built these walls around you, to protect all that you own; You have kept out what's important, How's it feel to be all alone?

I bet you have amazing insight doing that work!

I really like what you said about Americans being both youth obsessed and aging- I saw a woman in her late 60's on the plane the other day reading 'Best and Worst Beach Bodies" from People Magazine. Not trying to judge but there was something off about it.

"The last stage of development is where Ego Integrity battles Despair and this just might be the most difficult crisis to face."

In conducting milieu therapy with seniors who have dementia, I've born witness to this last task. The grace and acceptance with which these people have accepted their path is humbling and thought-proviking. Americans are both youth-obsessed and aging.

How, I wonder, will the next generation of elders (the boomers) handle this paradox?

I think you might be missing the point. As adults we need to focus on friendship with other adults for OUR happiness, not the happiness of our children. Aren't you again, making it all about the children?

First time I'm reading this online. I normally wouldn't jump in the fray, but I agree with Rob wholeheartedly (and I'm Joseph!). That line is poorly stated and misleading.

The question was what moment moved me into my passion. I'm passionate about preaching God's Word.
What I simply meant to say was this: Before that morning, the thought of preaching had never crossed my mind—ever. That morning, it was injected in me.
I want the heart to be clear, so feel free to respond. Thanks, Rob!
